Dr. Carmichael graduated from the Cornell University College of veterinary medicine-- the same University where his world-renowned father, Dr. L.E. Carmichael, discovered the vaccination for Canine Parvovirus. After completing a six-year residency program at Blue Cross Animal Hospital in Northern Virginia under the mentorship of Dr. Chuck Williams, Dr. Carmichael received his Board Certification in The American Veterinary Dental College.

Dr. Carmichael is currently the head of the dentistry service at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island, located in West Islip, NY. Prior to that, he was head of the Dentistry Service at the Animal Medical Center located in New York City, where he can still be found on Mondays. Dr. Carmichael is first and foremost a clinical practitioner, treating over 1000 cases a year. His special areas of interest include jaw fracture repair and oral cancer surgery. He also serves as mentor to residents, interns, and future veterinarians and future veterinary dentists.

Dr. Carmichael has published numerous scientific papers and lectured extensively on the subject of Veterinary Dentistry. In addition to clinical private practice, Dr. Carmichael periodically volunteers his services at the Bronx Zoo, lectures to veterinary technicians at local colleges, and supervises a course of study in animal dentistry for (human) dental students at the Columbia School of Oral and Dental Surgery.

Dr. Carmichael lives in Babylon, NY with his wife Peggy and son Tommy and enjoys camping, skiing, and fly-fishing in his spare time.
